MATTHEW JUKES Barolo report

Virna – Barolo

2010 Virna, Barolo ££

This wine promises some fruit on the nose and it delivers it in a rather mean way - it is there, but flanked by very sour tannin and dank oak. It will age smoothly, but I venture that these elements will never allow it to ever sing, as it should. 16+/20

2010 Virna, Barolo del Comune di Barolo ££

A nice nose and a decent level of flavour and balance. The tannins are very sour, but the fruit can cope with it and it has a certain herbal freshness which helps on the back palate, too. Pretty good. 17++/20

2010 Virna, Barolo Cannubi Boschis £££

More depth and fruit sweetness (as one would hope), but no more true complexity, this is a competent and accurate wine with a decent finish and nice bright cherry fruit from the kick off. The oak is a bit too resinous but it will calm down. 17.5++/20
